  • Responsibly Sourced Down

Like many of our customers, we at Katabatic Gear are concerned with the environmental and animal welfare impact of our products. We are dedicated to a responsibly sourced, and very high quality product, just like our down supplier, Allied Feather and Down. They are certified through both the bluesign® and Responsible Down Standard® programs.

    850+ Fill Power HyperDRY™ Down

We use the highest quality 850+ fill power HyperDRY™ hydrophobic down. Why choose down over synthetic insulation? Down is significantly more compressible, while still offering more generous loft and superior warmth to weight ratio. Additionally, synthetic insulation breaks down faster over the life of the product, losing loft and warmth more quickly than down. As a result, a down-filled product will stay in your kit longer, and out of the landfill, making down a better value and better choice for the environment.

Pertex Quantum Eco Ripstop (10 Denier, .85 oz/yd)

The best fabric you’ll find for the shell of an ultralight down jacket.
    1. Keeps your insulation drier: Best DWR we’ve tested
    2. Keeps your insulation loftier: Lightweight, soft, breathable, and downproof
    3. Reduces demand for raw materials: Eco version of Pertex Quantum is made from recycled yarns and maintains the fabric’s advanced performance qualities

    Pertex Quantum Taffeta (20 Denier, 1.0 oz/yd)

This Pertex Quantum plain weave makes for a silky soft liner fabric on the inside of our down jackets. We get tons of customer feedback stating that it’s the most comfortable performance fabric to ever brush up against them – not as clammy or crinkly as other fabrics.
  • Sustainability

Why yes, we do think it matters. It matters a lot!

From the fine details to big picture goals, we know our decisions about materials, partnerships, and daily operations can have far reaching effects outside this building. Climate change affects us all. It is personal. We have more progress to make, but here are a few ways we currently prioritize sustainability.
    1. Reduce demand for raw materials
      1. We build our jackets with fabrics made from recycled yarns (Pertex Quantum ECO).
    2. Reduce the use of harmful chemicals
      1. Our fabric and down suppliers are bluesign® approved, so we know their processes and technologies are monitored and certified to minimize impact on people and the environment. All of our down is also RDS® (Responsible Down Standard) approved and certified to be ethically sourced.
    3. Reduce our carbon footprint and waste in landfills
      1. We’ve elected to have 100% of our Colorado shop’s electricity sourced from Xcel Energy’s Windsource program.
      2. We intentionally design gear with longevity in mind. Ultralight gear does not have to fall apart sooner than other gear.
      3. We donate gear to organizations and individuals in need, instead of sending it to the landfill.
      4. We recycle and/or reuse packaging, office waste, and personal waste in the shop.
      5. When available, our UPS shipments use the Carbon Neutral Offset program. This is currently not huge for us, but we’re working on having it applied to all of our UPS shipments. Once accomplished, we’ll use UPS for the majority of our shipping, in and out.

While Katabatic Gear is committed to making UL gear that exceeds your expectations, it is equally important that we minimize our negative impact on the planet and its occupants. Whether it’s a special place in the backcountry, or the city you live in, we want to do our part to maintain healthy land, air, and water to keep this a comfy home for all. Though ours is not a perfect plan, we will continue to search for ways to improve our sustainability efforts, and minimize the impact of our operations on the planet.

cute, light and warm

This has become my go-to puffy for winter mountaineering. As light as my Patagonia down but warmer, lighter than my parka but almost just as warm. Wish the hood was a bit bigger but otherwise love this puffy.

The UL puffy of my dreams!

I love this jacket. As with all Katabatic Gear products, it's high quality and well-made. I've found myself putting this jacket on nearly every time I leave the house this winter. It's a very effective insulating layer and if I wear it while exercising vigorously, it's not uncommon for me to overheat, even when temps are in the single digits.

In terms of the fit, I bought a size larger than what I normally wear so that I had plenty of room to layer underneath. It's a tiny bit bigger than I'd prefer but not excessively so.

Worth noting is the excellent warmth-to-weight ratio of this jacket. It's also very reasonably priced compared to similar products. This is the lightweight insulated jacket I've been waiting for and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!

The warmest puffy I’ve ever owned!

This is the toastiest warmest puffy I’ve ever worn. It keeps me comfortably warm in sub zero temps. Wore it in -16 degree weather the other day and felt cozy!

For reference I am 5’6 and 135 lbs and got a medium. It was roomy enough to layer underneath. I could have sized smaller and it would have probably been form fitting but preferred a looser fit

The jacket is super lightweight, I can never tell if I actually packed it 🤣 For how light it is, it’s very durable. I’ve stuffed it in my backcountry ski pack alongside my avi gear, my dog has burrowed into it, and it’s already gone thru the wash a few times. Still performing amazing!

Awesome Jacket

I received my women's XL Tin Cup just before the recent cold snap into the single digits. This is a great jacket! It is even warmer than any other comparable jacket I own and blocks wind better. Best of all, it packs down really small. I also like the length in the back and that it is a little more fitted so I don't look like the Michelin woman. Since this is Katabatic's first jacket, I would change these things. Elastic at the end of the cuffs and not under them. This keeps my natural skin oils from darkening the fabric when the fabric brushes my arms and hands. A deeper hood. I sleep in mine when it is cold and like pulling down the hood. The current hood or wearing a climbing helmet is too shallow for this hood. Overall though, one of the warmest jackets available right now, and I also have a FF Eos and Ghost.

Love this puffy!

Great fabric, super toasty, really well thought out hood. I love this jacket. My only complaint is that the hips are too small by a significant margin. I am 5'7", 142 lbs. The rest of the jacket fits perfectly. Hoping that the next iteration has more room in the hips/butt.
