  • Responsibly Sourced Down

Like many of our customers, we at Katabatic Gear are concerned with the environmental and animal welfare impact of our products. We are dedicated to a responsibly sourced, and very high quality product, just like our down supplier, Allied Feather and Down. They are certified through both the bluesign® and Responsible Down Standard® programs.

    850+ Fill Power HyperDRY™ Down

We use the highest quality 850+ fill power HyperDRY™ hydrophobic down. Why choose down over synthetic insulation? Down is significantly more compressible, while still offering more generous loft and superior warmth to weight ratio. Additionally, synthetic insulation breaks down faster over the life of the product, losing loft and warmth more quickly than down. As a result, a down-filled product will stay in your kit longer, and out of the landfill, making down a better value and better choice for the environment.

    Sustainability

Why yes, we do think it matters. It matters a lot!

From the fine details to big picture goals, we know our decisions about materials, partnerships, and daily operations can have far reaching effects outside this building. Climate change affects us all. It is personal. We have more progress to make, but here are a few ways we currently prioritize sustainability.
    1. Reduce demand for raw materials
      1. We build our jackets with fabrics made from recycled yarns (Pertex Quantum ECO).
    2. Reduce the use of harmful chemicals
      1. Our fabric and down suppliers are bluesign® approved, so we know their processes and technologies are monitored and certified to minimize impact on people and the environment. All of our down is also RDS® (Responsible Down Standard) approved and certified to be ethically sourced.
    3. Reduce our carbon footprint and waste in landfills
      1. We’ve elected to have 100% of our Colorado shop’s electricity sourced from Xcel Energy’s Windsource program.
      2. We intentionally design gear with longevity in mind. Ultralight gear does not have to fall apart sooner than other gear.
      3. We donate gear to organizations and individuals in need, instead of sending it to the landfill.
      4. We recycle and/or reuse packaging, office waste, and personal waste in the shop.
      5. When available, our UPS shipments use the Carbon Neutral Offset program. This is currently not huge for us, but we’re working on having it applied to all of our UPS shipments. Once accomplished, we’ll use UPS for the majority of our shipping, in and out.

While Katabatic Gear is committed to making UL gear that exceeds your expectations, it is equally important that we minimize our negative impact on the planet and its occupants. Whether it’s a special place in the backcountry, or the city you live in, we want to do our part to maintain healthy land, air, and water to keep this a comfy home for all. Though ours is not a perfect plan, we will continue to search for ways to improve our sustainability efforts, and minimize the impact of our operations on the planet.

Another excellent product

Loved my Tincup and so I got a Tarn for warmer weather and it did not disappoint.

Wore this hiking the Wind River High Route and it kept me warm in wind, rain (under my shell), and snow. comfortable enough to sleep in and/or to wear all day. The elastic cuffs are excellent, they don't chafe, and the hood stays on when the jacket is zipped all the way up. No drop pockets is my only gripe.

I'm 5'10", 190 lb and the large fits me well. The medium was too small.

Tarn Down Jacket

I bought the Tarn after comparing it to the FF Eos. I thought the hood fit and adjustment looked better on the Tarn which was important to me. I wished the Tarn had an interior or exterior chest pocket like the Eos, but ultimately that was not a deal breaker for me. The specs and price on the Tarn are great! I am 6'2" 44" chest 36" waist and 205lb. Usually an XL fits me fine. I liked everything about the look and feel of the Tarn when it arrived, but in the end it was just too snug for me. The sleeves were long enough and the length was fine and the hood was well designed as I expected, but through the chest and mid-section it was too tight for me to comfortably layer anything more than a t-shirt. I need to wear at least a lightweigh baselayer and R-1 type midweight fleece and that was not possible without the jacket being too tight for comfort. I expect someone 10 or more lbs. lighter than me might find it just right, but I reluctantly returned it. I will try this coat again if it is made roomier and if it gets a chest pocket it would be perfect for my needs.

Down, down, down we go

The Tarn is the first proper puffer I've owned. So far it's performed very well in the conditions I've been able to use it in ranging down to single digits with various layers and it's extremely comfy. Overall I love it and would buy again. Some notes:
Cut of the Tarn I would describe as technical. I am 6'3" with about a 44in chest and went with a large. I would not be able to shove just any sweatshirt underneath it without compressing the down. Tighter fitting fleece, heavy weight base layers, sun shirts all layer fine. If extending this into deeper temps I would suggest a bulky, somewhat loose even wind or impervious rain layer on top rather than just going with a larger size. The cut is most noticeable in the armpits.
Hood is great. Comes right up over my chin. Snug but can still fit head layers underneath.
Wrist cuffs are snug to keep wind out but plenty of room for light-midweight gloves over the wrists.
Zipper is quite smooth and so far has avoided snagging any fabric, which has been especially nice when operating with gloves. I added a slightly longer pull, personal preference.
So light I forget it's in the backpack or even on my body.

Odd fit

I did a lot of research for the exact jacket that I wanted and settled on the Tarn for its warmth/weight ratio. Upon receiving it, I Ioved the quality of the jacket. It just fit oddly. I'm a pretty slender guy (6'1'' 170) and it was far too snug in the chest/pit areas. I tried both the medium and the large and neither seemed to work. I ended up returning both.

I would absolutely be first in line to snag a second edition of these guys after some changes. But at the moment, they just don't work for me.

Love the Katabatic Brand- thanks!

Jack
