I've touched baby's skin that was rougher. Very warm and very packable.
My wife bought me this for a birthday gift. Long/Wide version (6’3” 195lbs).
I have used sleeping bags up until this point. This meant I had a (good) shock with how light and packable this quilt is.
I did a yard test with my setup in the yard. I am a warm sleeper. I wore socks, lightweight running tights layer, mid weight smart wool long sleeve shirt, and a winter hat. I also use a S2S ~3.5 R Value pad.
I was totally comfortable and the overnight temp was 35 degrees, (I use a thermometer to check) and there were near constant 15-20 mph winds.
I did not use the straps and the quilt “hugged” me the entire night. I toss and turn a lot so I was incredibly surprised by this. The projected low was 42 so I wasn’t quite expecting such a low or I would’ve used the straps but I’m glad I didn’t and I got to test it in colder temps than I will typically ever backpack in.
I would very highly recommend this product, it more than lives up to its temp rating. Fantastic quality, the quilt feels really nice on your skin, super light and super packable.
I will definitely sing its praises any chance I get.
This is my first quilt and I am very pleased with it. It is remarkably comfortable and it's simple design is versatile for my tossing and turning.
Quilt quest finally ended on the katabatic quilt. I tried a bunch of different brands and all fell short in comfort and or warmth. The Exo mountain gear podcast brought me here. This wide and long quilt checks all the boxes for a 6’2” 200lb restless cold sleeper! The attachment method is the best also. I immediately took the quilt on a cold desert backpacking trip and it preformed perfectly. Thank you for a great product.
I’m new to quilts, and I love the Palisade. I generally toss and turn a lot throughout the night, and this quilt gave me plenty of room to move and kept me plenty warm in the low 40s. I was able to easily regulate the temp inside by sliding the pad attachment slides outward to vent and inward to seal the heat in. Worked great on my Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated sleeping pad--something I wasn't sure about, given the I-beam shape of the sleeping pad, but the quilt attachment cords stayed tight on the pad and I didn't feel them under me at all.
Never used a quilt before. Turns out I'm a fan. Already spent multiple nights below 15 degrees. Has worked well.
This is the second katabatic quilt for me they are simply the best, well made easy to use and they work as advertised, completely Awsom!
My reliable and oh so cozy Katabatic Flex 15 quilt and Piñon bivy caused me to invest in this lovely down jacket! I bought the medium and have a goodly amount of room for layering, although hourglass-shaped. The sleeves are bit long on me, but who's complaining? This puffy has become an essential part of my sleep system. Thanks for waiting on mailing, Katabatic! I am a very low budget hiker who lives low to the ground, but feel satisfied with my investment. Was super disappointed when the original grenadier 5°F was discontinued. Purchased the original 7 years ago and it's still keeping me toasty on those -20° excursions. I'm 5' 9" and got both in the 6' wide with 5oz overfill. Highly recommend getting the wide. Paired with a neoair xtherm nxt you will be cozy down to -20f guaranteed. Nothing else on the market even comes close to this quilt. Also have the katabatic tincup down jacket. Liked it so much I bought one for my mom! Katabatic gear is the best company out there! Excellent customer service, attention to detail, value for money, and lightest fluffy quilts! Highly recommended!
Purchased this to hopefully get something warmer than my Arcteryx Cerium LT that also had a bit more room for layering. Ordered a medium (same as the Cerium) and the fit was similar but with just the right amount of extra room. The sleeves also seem a bit longer which I liked. The material on the Tincup has a matte finish v.s. the shinier Cerium. It’s also a significantly better value than the Cerium.
I’m 5’10” 160lbs 34” waist (ok, maybe a bit more) and the medium fit perfect. I would not want it any larger. I’ve got the Flex 22 and Flex 15 quilts and now the Tincup and have always been happy with Katabatic's quality, performance and value.
This is my first quilt and was a little concerned about drafts and the latch system getting in & out in the middle of the night. I have tested the quilt at 25 degrees and slept under a tarp and did not experience any drafts, even in the foot box. I sleep comfortable with the Flex 15 using a pad with an R-value of 5.8 and a light base layer & wool socks. Getting in and out was not any more cumbersome than working a zipper. I have a 48" chest so I went with the wide version and have more room than a mommy bag. To top it all off I saved 2 lbs from a mummy bag.
For me strikes the perfect balance of features/warmth/durability and weight. Most of these kind of jackets aren't warm enough, or they are full on parkas. Any ultralight tissue thin shell fabric has its place, but for most uses, I want proper pockets, decent durability, etc. Took it on a week of camping and backpacking, used it every day. Great job!
When my ghost whisperer hoody finally gave up the ghost, I bought a new one, the ghost whisperer 2. When it arrived, it felt flimsier somehow than the original and I returned it. I did a lot of research, balancing cost, durability and warmth. The Tarn won the theoretical research. I bought one and have now used it twice on early winter backpacking trips in the Olympics. I am really happy with the purchase. One reason I chose it is the 20D exterior fabric - it feels much more durable than the 10D fabric of the competition. It does add an ounce or so, but I think it it worth it in the long run, as are the higher quality zippers. It does not pack down quite as small as some other jackets, but it has more down fill. Temps only went down to high 30’s on my test trips, but the Tarn kept me warm and toasty. I wouldn’t depend on it for my only insulating layer for temps in the teens, but this is not supposed to be a deep winter jacket. I like the way the hood fits and allows for good visibility - the adjustment toggle may add a half ounce but it’s well worth it. I also appreciate the higher situated pockets - I am able to wear this with my pack on and still access the pockets above my pack waist belt. Thoughtful design. I’m really happy with this jacket and look forward to years of warmth.
I used my Flex on about half of my 2022 AT thru hike, and this year on the entire PCT, as well as on multiple other section hikes. All in all, it has almost 4,000 miles on it, and it's still incredibly warm--to the point that I overheat if I wear anything more than a pair of shorts to bed above 45 degrees. And with the flex strap clips, I can toss and turn all I like on my terrible ultralight sleeping pads, while still remaining warm! I will probably use this quilt to finish out my triple crown. Warmth for weight combined with the flexibility of use, this is hands down the best quilt on the market. I literally couldn't find anything lighter for a better price. Other quilt companies just don't produce the same level of quality while keeping weight down and still making sure I don't freeze at night. Why would you look anywhere else but Katabatic honestly
